Coast Guard Policy, Sharks, And Poe: 3 Military Facts We Didn’t Know

  • Edgar Allan Poe dedicated his third volume of poetry to the cadets of West Point.
  • The skipper of the USS Indianapolis, who was court-martialed after the ship was sunk and 900 sailors were lost, many to sharks, killed himself in 1968.
  • The Coast Guard allows its members to temporarily separate from the service and then return, as long as they do it within two years. This seems to me to make an awful lot of sense. Imagine a situation where a spouse wants to go to law school and you need to be primary parent for a couple of years. This sort of flexibility helps retention and saves money. Hmmm—maybe it just makes too much sense.
