While it can’t be foretold with absolute certainty what lies ahead of us on the other side of major catastrophe, one thing we can count on is eventual food and supply shortages, and very probably, cash shortages. When preparing for such a situation, you have a choice: Have severe frugality forced upon you, or prepare your family now by embracing moderate frugality today.
Living frugal today in preparation for a disaster later is probably the best financial advice for preppers. Not only will it enable you to invest additional resources into your family survival plan, it will greatly lessen the shock and smooth the transition into survival mode.
Frugal Prepping -The Practical way to go …
At a minimum, Frugal Prepping simply means living within your means so that you are able to build yourself a financial cushion. For beginning preppers, this is important to ensure that you can build sufficient emergency reserves of supplies and cash (cash on hand, not at the bank). In addition, you will want to gradually reduce your reliance on things that may not be available to you, such as utilities and fuel.
The more your family becomes accustomed to living with less, the better prepared they will be for survival mode. This doesn’t mean you need to give up all of the creature comforts of life today; it simply means rearranging priorities and applying some practical thrift tactics in your budget.
If you haven’t been to a thrift store lately, you may be surprised at what you will find there. It’s not at all uncommon to find high-end, lightly-used clothing, kitchen goods, and other household items. And, if you shop at the thrift stores located in the more affluent areas, the quality goes up.
A membership to a warehouse store always pays off, and if you are buying food items for both current consumption and storage, it is the best way to stretch your dollars.
Coupon clipping has become a sport of sorts for many people intent on saving money at the store. Hardcore clippers boast of savings hundreds of dollars a month. The key, of course is to use the coupons in conjunction with sales to maximize savings. Clippers will tell you that the savings are greater than what you can get from the warehouse stores. While that may be true, coupon clipping does require good organization and dedicated effort in order to maximize your savings.
There’s a possibility that you may not have access to a car or fuel following a disaster, and that’s not the time to start figuring out what alternative means of transportation to use. Bikes will likely become the primary mode of transportation in that situation, so now would be the time to acclimate yourself to a two-wheeler. Using your bike now as a primary mode of transportation will save you a significant amount of money, and it will enhance your fitness, which will also come in handy.
Invest in DIY
Learning essential skills is not only crucial for survival, it can save you money today. Skills such as car repair, sewing, first aid, home maintenance, gardening, fishing, and hunting would be invaluable in survival mode, and they can all be learned inexpensively through your local community college or other community organizations.
Frugal Prepping doesn’t have to detract from your lifestyle. In fact, for those who embrace it, it can be fun and it actually improves the quality of life, which can be much more important, both now, and after disaster strikes.
